About

Would you like to serve your community as an expert in how information is developed in a globally connected, technological society? Do you want to make a difference while you make a living?

Through ECU's Department of Interdisciplinary Studies, you can earn a Master in Library Science (MLS) degree completely online. Since 1939, the library science program at ECU has prepared librarians and school media coordinators to meet the information and educational needs of their communities, especially rural and underserved populations in eastern North Carolina. Today, our high-tech/high-touch program emphasizes librarianship in combination with current technologies to provide a web-based course of study. Our program is especially attuned to the needs of nontraditional students seeking to become school library media coordinators, as well as academic and public librarians in a global community.

As a student in the library science graduate program, you can specialize your professional preparation work in academic library, public library or school library concentrations. If you are a service-oriented, intellectually and technically curious person, you will find a great benefit as a student in the MLS program. With an MLS degree, you can be a librarian, a library administrator, an information specialist, a subject/special interest researcher, or one of many other library specialties in the field.

The school library media coordinator concentration leads to the North Carolina licensure and is recognized by the American Association of School Librarians (AASL) and the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE). The public library concentration leads to the North Carolina Public Library Certification. The accreditation by American Library Association (ALA) supports needed credentials for public and academic librarians in the United States.

ECU Advantage

The MLS program at East Carolina University was granted full initial ALA accreditation in February 2015. The program offers a school library focused set of courses that meets the requirements of the North Carolina Public Library certification and the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction for licensure as a school library media coordinator. The public library set of courses meets the requirements for public library certification in North Carolina. The academic library set of courses prepares students to work in college and university libraries in the United States. The MLS program is nationally recognized by the American Association of School Librarians of the American Library Association (NCATE-ALA/AASL). The College of Education is accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education.

    Comprehensive Assessment Requirement

All ECU graduate programs require students to successfully complete a comprehensive assessment requirement. This program requires that all MLS and licensure students complete a portfolio as the culminating capstone product for their degree. The portfolio includes an artifact from each required LIBS course and a reflection for each artifact. The portfolio is reviewed as a requirement for graduation. Each student posts their course artifacts to a Taskstream portfolio as they complete the core and required concentration courses. The artifacts are designated assignments in each course that demonstrate a mastery of professional skills, abilities, and dispositions required for practice in the profession. A reflection essay associated with each artifact acts as a record of the student's self-assessment, explaining how each artifact demonstrates mastery of the learning objectives and related professional standards for each course. Students must pass the final portfolio to obtain the MLS degree.
